James Brown Estate Battle

James Brown Will Trust Estate

Years after the death of the legendary James Brown, an estate battle over his estimated $100 million fortune continues, and was recently profiled in an issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

Brown left his entire estate in trust to assist with the education of underprivileged children in his home state of Georgia and South Carolina. However, none of that wealth has been distributed yet due to legal squabbles between Brown's fourth wife, his seven children and the trust.

The children and Brown's fourth wife, Tomi Rae Hynie, contested the will in South Carolina courts for three years following Brown's death on Christmas Day in 2006. The court battles grew to such proportions that then-state Attorney General Henry McMaster brokered a deal that affirmed the will but split the estate between Brown's family and the trust, with the trust responsible for millions in legal costs for over two dozen attorneys.

Brown's attorney, Buddy Dallas, says that Brown's irrevocable trust was intentionally drafted to exclude his children from profiting from his estate. And despite the 2009 settlement, nothing has been paid yet to the family, the children, or the attorneys, since there are still several outstanding appeals yet to be concluded.

James Joseph Brown (May 3, 1933 - December 25, 2006) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and recording artist. He is the recognized originator of funk music and dance. In his 60 year career, Brown influenced the development of many different musical genres. Brown stylized blues and gospel with an "Africanized" approach to music. Brown holds the record as the artist who charted the most singles on the Billboard Hot 100 without ever hitting number one on that chart.

For many years, Brown's touring show was one of the most extravagant productions in American popular music. Brown employed around 50 people for the James Brown Revue, that traveled with him in a bus all over the country, performing upwards of 330 shows a year with almost all of the shows as one-nighters. In 1986, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 1990 into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Don't let your estate end up in a extended and expensive emotional court proceedings.
